He has set up a page where you can donate to charities that are close to his heart at justgiving, I think this is lovely idea to help those in need. I will put a permanent link to the charity page on the info of this community so if anyone feels like giving any time of the year, and not just Christmas it will be easy to find.

On the subject of gritty realism in 70s British TV, one show that was heavily criticised at the time for taking things too far (especially as regards violence) was the BBC's cop show Target, starring Patrick Mower. It only lasted 17 episodes between 1977 and 1978 before the BBC, as usual, caved in to pressure and cancelled the show.
And they've never released the series on DVD either, as far as I know.
I only have dim memories of this program, but I do remember it as being exceptionally violent. It made The Sweeney seem like a kids' show.
